I do make the occasional public post, but the majority of my LiveJournal posts are Friends Only.

If you want me to add you, please comment on this entry. Most of the time I keep my LJ to people I know, either in real life or from other places on the internet, so please don't be offended if I don't friend you back.

I've finally got the basics online for the Circle. It's not nearly finished yet, I need to get lots of information from various people, and to set up the contact form and guestbook.

Please let me know what you think, I'm sure someone will spot a really obvious mistake that I've missed.

Admittedly, it is just a holding page, but still! Hopefully I'll manage to get some content on there soon.

And if it's you, hello.

Feel free to read anything on here. I do tend to ramble on though, and to talk nonsense, so please don't take this too seriously.

I know you'll only be able to read the public entries at the moment, but if you decide to sign up I'll unlock the other entries for you.

If you want to see my website the link is on the right of this page, as is the link to the Derren Brown Fan Forum (although you'll have to sign up to see the forum).

Women in Magic

I've just made one of my rare visits to the Magic Cafe. I've not been on the site for months, so this is the first time that I've seen their "One for the Ladies" section. I must admit, that although the idea sounds good in theory, personally I don't like it.

Magic is a male dominated area, but so what? Magic is a very geeky, obsessive, nerdy thing. Those attributes are more widespread in men than in women. Therefore men are more likely to be interested in magic than women are.

The majority of magicians are men, and therefore the majority of effects are geared for use by men. It isn't an ideal situation, but it isn't an impossible one either.

There is no need to set up seperate areas for women, to make a point of the fact that they are different. It is this kind of attitude that could well discourage the minority of women who are interested in magic.

Surely, if you do magic, then that should be all that matters? That you do it well. Not whether you are male or female.

I see nothing wrong with playing to your strengths:
For example, David Blaine plays on his weirdness, Paul Daniels is cheery and funny, Paul Zenon is mischevious.

If a female is doing magic, and she can use it to her advantage, then I see no reason why she shouldn't. But it is just one of many attributes that can be emphasized. It should not be her only selling point.

And as for me?

Well I'm the first to admit that I am not very good at magic, but I would never dream of using the fact that I am female as a reason or an excuse. I simply don't put in enough effort. I don't practice enough, and I don't have the confidence to perform to anyone.

Uh... Hello

I'm here. You'll have to bear with me for a bit while I learn how to use it though...

Edit: Just for the record, all entries before this one were made on my old blog, and I've manually transferred them across to here.
